How do you know which processor is compatible with your computer?

I know it has to be compatible with your motherboard but how do you find out what ones can be used? (And I'm probably doing this completely wrong)

I want to upgrade the processor in one of my computers

Motherboard Model: Gateway RS780

Motherboard Chipset: AMD 780G (RS780) + SP5100 (SB700)

Motherboard Slots: 2xPCI, 3xPCI Express x1, 1xPCI Express x16How do you know which processor is compatible with your computer?
Each CPU will have a slot type that it fits into...

Every motherboard will say what type of slot it features...

For example, the AMD Phenom II x4 945 is an AM3 CPU. It will fit into motherboards that feature AM2+, AM3 and AM3+ CPU slots.

That motherboard you have listed is an AM2+ card.
