Online is where u can play against or with people from all over the world. It doesn't cost anything and is completely FREE, it uses your wifi modem ( doesnt use memory as it has it's own) and is completely safe if you mute the players mics whilst in game.
It doesn't use memory from your computer. PSN, like any other online service, uses bandwidth. That means that if he plays online whilst you use the computer to watch your dramas, etc., both will get lag. That means the experience will be slow if and only if you have low download speeds (1.5M to 3M).How does playstation 3 online work?
It's just an online account that he can make on his PS3 or on the computer and can be logged onto both, it enables friends to play together online, it's safe.

It does not use memory from your computer. It basically has a memory of it's own. It's harmless.
This wont affect your modem in any way it just uses your housholds internet, and its perfectly safe.
