How do I transfer files from my old computer to my new computer?

I just purchased a new computer. The new computer has Windows XP, USB ports, a Firewire port, RJ 11, and RJ45 port.

The old computer has Windows Vista, USB ports, RJ11, and RJ45(no Firewire).

I need to tranfer my files from the old computer to the new one. What is best way to do this? Software, cables, etc? Windows has a files transfer setting. Will I have a problem since one computer is XP and the other is Vista? How do I transfer files from my old computer to my new computer?
Assuming the computer are not networked, I'd use either a large usb flash drive or an external usb hard disk.

You could burn files to cd..but that would take a while.
i quicker way to do this is do connect both computers via USB lead wait for the divice to be found access it in the (my comuter) aplication and tranfer all across loads quicker!

Use a flash drive. It is the simplest and the most reliable way.

You can transfer settings without any problem.

Now that you mentioned RJ45, you can connect both computers with a 'crossover cable' one with the leads crimped reversely. You can get it in any computer shack.

Then you add them in a workgroup and share the folders and files.

Then its pointless transfering files in the network. They are available to both computers anyway.
Lots of ways to do this,

Useing a memory stick,

Using disks

or if you have the internet set up

you can email all the files to yourself

and then open the files throught your new computer

i really hope this helps
