Well, you could reset the router from your browser. It'd cause the internet to drop for a few minutes.
Open the Network and Sharing Center on your computer,
from there go to Adapter Settings, and then right click on the adapter
your computer is using to connect to the internet. Choose, "Status."
From there, click "Details" and look at the number listed as the "Default Gateway."
Type this number into your browser, as if it were a url.
It should look something like this: 192.168.2.1 or whatever.
From there you'll have access to your router (unless there is a password.)
Every router is different, so I can't help you beyond this point.
I used to live with an annoying little sister who often wouldn't get offline to do her hw.
Either I told her she couldn't be online and she threw a fit, or I'd block her mac address via the router settings and the problem would mysteriously be solved.
btw, I think this is more reliable than trying to use up your bandwidth. If you're going to do that, the easiest way would be to download a really popular and current movie with lots of seeders. Im looking to probably build my own computer for gaming purposes?

System volume on disk is corrupt?
I have a 2 year old HP Pavillion p6113f. While typing up a Word document, I got this pop up and before I could thoroughly read the message, my computer froze. It was something like "Errror: 897849456544xx - 54568485646588x". I couldnt CTRL+ALT DEL or turn the computer off. I had to unplug and replug the power cord. I was able to log back into Windows 7 but as I started to open up Internet Explorer or any other program, it would freeze and I would get the "Windows Has Stopped Responding" pop up. The program would close itself and then the computer would freeze.I was never able to log into Windows 7 again. I restarted and got the DOS screen where it says that Windows didnt shut down properly and to either select Start Windows normally or repair (I think that was the option) the program. I chose repair the system and it started scanning files and after a few seconds of scanning, it froze on a line that said something like "Scan is unreadable' followed by a line that ended in something like SYSPSP. I was never able to get into that scan again. I tried to get into Windows Safe Mode and all those other F8, F10, F11 options and nothing worked except for the Windows System Recovery. I did the Back Up Files section and it froze after 2 minutes and didnt back up any files. I then tried the "See whats wrong with your computer" option and it said the System Volume on Disk is corrupt. I was never able to get into the System Recovery Manager again. Ever since then I got the Reboot and Select Proper Device or Inert boot media" message and cant get out of there. I dont have any of the CD's or information that came with the desktop and was told by a few friends that my hard drive is no longer useable, so I went out and bought a comparable hard drive. I installed the hard drive and am still getting the same reboot message. After a few times, I was able to get into the System Diagnostics programa and I got an error message saying there was no installed hard drive. How is this possible if its a new hard drive and properly connected?
I would like to at least get my files off my old hard drive first and foremost and if possible, be able to still use the old hard drive. If either or both cannot be repaired, I would like to know what is wrong and what I should do to get my computer working and what parts I should buy if necessary. I would like to try and save my computer seeing as how it is only 2 years old, but if I need a new computer, I would like some suggestions on desktops and laptops. I've always had HP Desktops and wouldnt mind another desktop, but am also looking into laptops/netbooks. I dont really use it much. Just shopping, emails, facebooking, everyday pictures and music. Dont need anything fancy.

You can remove the old hard drive and put it into an enclosure.Plug it into your new PC as a slave.Then you can copy your files off it.

What is a cool name for a gaming computer?
It may sound silly but I am trying to name my first computer. I want it to be something cool. Some things you may want to know: I like using greek letters to substitute numbers i.e. this is my first computer so maybe "alpha" something, It is a gaming computer, it is a heavily modified Lenovo IdeaCenter (modded for gaming i.e. new cpu, gpu) I thought it may be kinda cool to incorporate some of the origional name into the new name i.e. keeping the Center part if IdeaCenter and replacing the "Idea" part with something cooler. For me it's when my computer freezes. I get so annoyed and start performing 'percussive maintenance', I swear (especially at the makers of my laptop), get huffy and stressed and start sulking.
Andddd not really sure what my pets names have to do with it, but mine are Dannie and Holly. Used to have another dog who had an awesome name: Montravia Prince of Pirates. The breeder gave him that name, but we changed it... to... Pickles. Not so sure why.
I have 2 dogs, Angie and Daisy. And an African Dwarf Frog named Freddie. And a girlfriend who's name I won't say lol. I love all of them dearly.
As for the other question, definitely more annoying when your computer freezes. Hiccups are very easy to get rid of if you know the trick. The trick has nothing to do with holding your breath of turning upside down... or scaring people lol (although that can be funny).
If you really want to get rid of your hiccups for good, chug a full glass of water while holding your ears or while having someone else hold your ears. This will release the trapped air that causes your hiccups. YOu need to run a 64 bit operating system to access more than 4 gigs of memory. So Vista 64 bit Home Premium is what I recommend. Its an iffish thing whether or not a particular game will work on a 64 bit platform, I have to be honest with you - it may or may not install and it may or may not work right. Better to find out from the game manufacturer first rather than be suprised later. Make darn sure you have SIGNED DRIVERS for ALL of your hardware because installing Vista 64 bit will cause you a NIGHTMARE if you do not have signed drivers, preferably WHQL certified drivers - I know, I am running Vista Home Premium 64 bit. Its a good thing you are thinking of that nVidia card, but I would go with the 9800 GTX+ overclocker made by BFG Tech. THen download the latest WHQL driver from nVidia for the 9XXX series of cards.
The difference is actually 2 x 512 = 1024 megabytes, so a 1 gig actually has 1024 megabytes or twice the amount of memory of a 512 Meg card. The more dedicated RAM the better! As far as I am concerned, you can never have enough memory.

What would you like to learn to do on the computer, but have not had time to learn?
I am excellent with computers and technology, so I am going to start up a YouTube account that features videos I will make explaining how to do various things on the computer, internet, etc. that people would be interested in learning how to do, but may not know how to go about learning.
Some ideas I have so far:
-Download songs from YouTube and save on computer for free
-Basic editing in photoshop (black and white, blurring, and/or selective color)
-Speed up web browsing in Firefox
-Download a torrent
- Simple steps to make GMail more efficient
Etc.
I have a few ideas on things people might find useful, but what would you personally like to learn? I am interested in seeing what people are curious to know about so I can make videos helping them.

If you are excellent they why do the basics? I think 90% of the things you mentioned people have covered. If not youtube already has tons of videos on how to do those things.
The first thing you should do is target the masses. I would think the breakdown of computer know how is as follows:
Group A. The number of people who are turning on a computer for the first time ever (without ever using one some place else or having friends/family to help with the basics) is about 10%
Group B. The number of computer gurus who know everything about everything (not just everything about one thing or some things) is about 10%
Group C. That leaves about 80% who need to know beyond the basics. So why not target them
Some of the things that I have had to teach myself over the last year (with free software)
1. For picture editing: Ok there are buttons that say blur, swirl, B%26amp;W, resize and and things. So all of that is easy and a chimp could do it. How to you add effects? How to make metal shimmer or overlay 1 picture onto another %26amp; things like that.
2. Video editing: With all the new TV's. Blu Ray Players, Play Stations, Roku, and things of that nature.... They will all let you watch videos/movies on your TV. The problem is that they only support certain video/audio types. So I download a video converter and convert it (again no big deal as a 6 year old can do it). But things the average person has no clue about... I had the movie U571 but when the germans were talking, the words were not written on the bottom of the screen in english. It would have been nice for a place that explained that is what those srt files are and how to embed it in the video. If my device plays mp4 files or mkv files, I have them in that format why will they not play. It would have been nice if there was a place that would have told me that it is the audio causing the problems. What free software I needed to use to just convert the audio in 10 mins, without converting the entire movie in 2 hours.
3. That mp4 files and m4v files are the exact same things. You do not have the spend two hours converting it. All you need do is change the file extension.
4. Getting files off of youtube was easy for me. Getting parts 1 - 6 and making it into one non flv file was not so easy.
5. Downloading torrents was rather basic. In the last week they have made it so browsers like chrome, IE, firefox can not open them. So now what? It took me days to figure out the work around.
6. The only thing I know about firefox is what I hear. What I hear is a lot of new computer users using it cuz people told them to. When asked why they have no clue. I have heard that it is nice since it is open source code. Well that is nice for people who can do code. It also has the drawback of it is very easy to mess with. I have also heard about the many sites/things that do not support it. So where is the video comparing it to chrome and why it is truly better?

I am looking to buy a new laptop and I got recommend to buy an ASUS. What I want to do is either have Ubuntu 10.04 LTS or 11.10 on it. I am going to be using it as a LAMP server for developing PHP sites before I put them online. I am going to use GIMP as my graphic design program. I was looking for at least 3gb of Memory and 320gb of HDD. I want it to be able to upgrade it to newer versions of Ubuntu, once they come out. I have a computer that was Windows 7 and died recently. I was soooo angry I just installed Ubuntu instead. It works fine.
Choose Ubuntu 10.04 LTS because 11.10 is truly horrible. Also with Ubuntu don't do upgrades - a clean install is always better.
You can also install Ubuntu side by side with Windows - so you can have two operating systems to choose from. It's called a Windows Dual Boot, more info here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Window鈥?/a>

asus is a greta Brand,many come with a free one year warranty included,as for upgrade,usually ubuntu has much lower requirements then windows. as for which laptops run ubuntu, any laptop will run ubuntu. however i would look into lenovo, you can a great laptop much cheaper from lenovo then asus. lenovo is at the top of quality in the laptop arena. contact me if you need more help.

System volume on disk is corrupt?
I have a 2 year old HP Pavillion p6113f. While typing up a Word document, I got this pop up and before I could thoroughly read the message, my computer froze. It was something like "Errror: 897849456544xx - 54568485646588x". I couldnt CTRL+ALT DEL or turn the computer off. I had to unplug and replug the power cord. I was able to log back into Windows 7 but as I started to open up Internet Explorer or any other program, it would freeze and I would get the "Windows Has Stopped Responding" pop up. The program would close itself and then the computer would freeze.I was never able to log into Windows 7 again. I restarted and got the DOS screen where it says that Windows didnt shut down properly and to either select Start Windows normally or repair (I think that was the option) the program. I chose repair the system and it started scanning files and after a few seconds of scanning, it froze on a line that said something like "Scan is unreadable' followed by a line that ended in something like SYSPSP. I was never able to get into that scan again. I tried to get into Windows Safe Mode and all those other F8, F10, F11 options and nothing worked except for the Windows System Recovery. I did the Back Up Files section and it froze after 2 minutes and didnt back up any files. I then tried the "See whats wrong with your computer" option and it said the System Volume on Disk is corrupt. I was never able to get into the System Recovery Manager again. Ever since then I got the Reboot and Select Proper Device or Inert boot media" message and cant get out of there. I dont have any of the CD's or information that came with the desktop and was told by a few friends that my hard drive is no longer useable, so I went out and bought a comparable hard drive. I installed the hard drive and am still getting the same reboot message. After a few times, I was able to get into the System Diagnostics programa and I got an error message saying there was no installed hard drive. How is this possible if its a new hard drive and properly connected?
I would like to at least get my files off my old hard drive first and foremost and if possible, be able to still use the old hard drive. If either or both cannot be repaired, I would like to know what is wrong and what I should do to get my computer working and what parts I should buy if necessary. I would like to try and save my computer seeing as how it is only 2 years old, but if I need a new computer, I would like some suggestions on desktops and laptops. I've always had HP Desktops and wouldnt mind another desktop, but am also looking into laptops/netbooks. I dont really use it much. Just shopping, emails, facebooking, everyday pictures and music. All of those things listed sound like lifehacker material. Most people already know how to do all those things, but you'd be surprised just how many complete morons there are in the world. Why just yesterday someone I know had an account banned on a forum and he uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled it because he thought the problem would be fixed.
Some ideas I have so far:
-Download songs from YouTube and save on computer for free
-Basic editing in photoshop (black and white, blurring, and/or selective color)
-Speed up web browsing in Firefox
-Download a torrent
- Simple steps to make GMail more efficient
Etc.
I have a few ideas on things people might find useful, but what would you personally like to learn? I am interested in seeing what people are curious to know about so I can make videos helping them.

If you are excellent they why do the basics? I think 90% of the things you mentioned people have covered. If not youtube already has tons of videos on how to do those things.
The first thing you should do is target the masses. I would think the breakdown of computer know how is as follows:
Group A. The number of people who are turning on a computer for the first time ever (without ever using one some place else or having friends/family to help with the basics) is about 10%
Group B. The number of computer gurus who know everything about everything (not just everything about one thing or some things) is about 10%
Group C. That leaves about 80% who need to know beyond the basics. So why not target them
Some of the things that I have had to teach myself over the last year (with free software)
1. For picture editing: Ok there are buttons that say blur, swirl, B%26amp;W, resize and and things. So all of that is easy and a chimp could do it. How to you add effects? How to make metal shimmer or overlay 1 picture onto another %26amp; things like that.
2. Video editing: With all the new TV's. Blu Ray Players, Play Stations, Roku, and things of that nature.... They will all let you watch videos/movies on your TV. The problem is that they only support certain video/audio types. So I download a video converter and convert it (again no big deal as a 6 year old can do it). But things the average person has no clue about... I had the movie U571 but when the germans were talking, the words were not written on the bottom of the screen in english. It would have been nice for a place that explained that is what those srt files are and how to embed it in the video. If my device plays mp4 files or mkv files, I have them in that format why will they not play. It would have been nice if there was a place that would have told me that it is the audio causing the problems. What free software I needed to use to just convert the audio in 10 mins, without converting the entire movie in 2 hours.
3. That mp4 files and m4v files are the exact same things. You do not have the spend two hours converting it. All you need do is change the file extension.
4. Getting files off of youtube was easy for me. Getting parts 1 - 6 and making it into one non flv file was not so easy.
5. Downloading torrents was rather basic. In the last week they have made it so browsers like chrome, IE, firefox can not open them. So now what? It took me days to figure out the work around.
6. The only thing I know about firefox is what I hear. What I hear is a lot of new computer users using it cuz people told them to. When asked why they have no clue. I have heard that it is nice since it is open source code. Well that is nice for people who can do code. It also has the drawback of it is very easy to mess with. I have also heard about the many sites/things that do not support it. So where is the video comparing it to chrome and why it is truly better?
7. Youtube in itself is a chore. If I had a dollar for every time a person asked me how to upload videos and things, I would have more money then Bill Gates.
8. File sharing: I get asked a lot about sending HUGE files to other people. Most e-mails have a very small cap on the size and are very slow. There are a bunch of people who have no desire to use peer to peer sites with all the bad stigma. How do they send large files to their friends for free.
These are just some of the many things I did not know the answers to, or get asked a lot. You really can not ask them in yahoo answers cuz it is a little more complex then making a color picture into a black and white one.What would you like to learn to do on the computer, but have not had time to learn?

You may have to change to the x16 setting to utilize your card if you haven't been using an expansion slot prior to now.

What ASUS computer should I get?
I am looking to buy a new laptop and I got recommend to buy an ASUS. What I want to do is either have Ubuntu 10.04 LTS or 11.10 on it. I am going to be using it as a LAMP server for developing PHP sites before I put them online. I am going to use GIMP as my graphic design program. I was looking for at least 3gb of Memory and 320gb of HDD. I want it to be able to upgrade it to newer versions of Ubuntu, once they come out. Choose Ubuntu 10.04 LTS because 11.10 is truly horrible. Also with Ubuntu don't do upgrades - a clean install is always better.

System volume on disk is corrupt?
I have a 2 year old HP Pavillion p6113f. While typing up a Word document, I got this pop up and before I could thoroughly read the message, my computer froze. It was something like "Errror: 897849456544xx - 54568485646588x". I couldnt CTRL+ALT DEL or turn the computer off. I had to unplug and replug the power cord. I was able to log back into Windows 7 but as I started to open up Internet Explorer or any other program, it would freeze and I would get the "Windows Has Stopped Responding" pop up. The program would close itself and then the computer would freeze.I was never able to log into Windows 7 again. I restarted and got the DOS screen where it says that Windows didnt shut down properly and to either select Start Windows normally or repair (I think that was the option) the program. I chose repair the system and it started scanning files and after a few seconds of scanning, it froze on a line that said something like "Scan is unreadable' followed by a line that ended in something like SYSPSP. I was never able to get into that scan again. I tried to get into Windows Safe Mode and all those other F8, F10, F11 options and nothing worked except for the Windows System Recovery. I did the Back Up Files section and it froze after 2 minutes and didnt back up any files. I then tried the "See whats wrong with your computer" option and it said the System Volume on Disk is corrupt. I was never able to get into the System Recovery Manager again. Ever since then I got the Reboot and Select Proper Device or Inert boot media" message and cant get out of there. I dont have any of the CD's or information that came with the desktop and was told by a few friends that my hard drive is no longer useable, so I went out and bought a comparable hard drive. I installed the hard drive and am still getting the same reboot message. After a few times, I was able to get into the System Diagnostics programa and I got an error message saying there was no installed hard drive. How is this possible if its a new hard drive and properly connected?
I would like to at least get my files off my old hard drive first and foremost and if possible, be able to still use the old hard drive. If either or both cannot be repaired, I would like to know what is wrong and what I should do to get my computer working and what parts I should buy if necessary. I would like to try and save my computer seeing as how it is only 2 years old, but if I need a new computer, I would like some suggestions on desktops and laptops. I've always had HP Desktops and wouldnt mind another desktop, but am also looking into laptops/netbooks. I dont really use it much. Just shopping, emails, facebooking, everyday pictures and music. Dont need anything fancy.

If Kaspersky found trojans, then that means you hadn't had any antivirus active on your computer prior to that. This tells me that your computer is most likely infected with some malware that is hiding well. Get Malwarebytes from download.com and run a full scan, remove all threats it finds, then run Kaspersky again. If you do this (clean your computer from viruses) and it still runs slow after that, then I would look into using some maintenance software that will defragment and optimize your hard drive to speed it up. If Kaspersky found trojans, then that means you hadn't had any antivirus active on your computer prior to that. This tells me that your computer is most likely infected with some malware that is hiding well. You're right. You will find very often, in crochet, that writing and reading instructions is a lot harder than actually doing the pattern. It's the nature of the beast.
Maybe I can give a few clues that combined with a tutorial might help.
All granny squares start with a ring. chain 4 and then make a slip stitch into the first chain (or the 4th from the hook).
chain 3. This will take the place of one of the posts of the first row.
Make 2 double crochet into the ring. Normally in crochet you insert the hook between the loops. Here, insert the hook directly into the circle. The dc will slide on the ring. This makes the first cluster of three posts which form the first side.
chain 2, this is the first corner.
and then make 3 more double crochet for the second side.
repeat the last two steps (ch 2, 3 dc) until you have four sides, or a square.
make a slip stitch into the the chain of the original ch 3 that you made in the beginning of the round.
That's the basics. Each row is much of the same, but you will add more clusters to lengthen the row.

My friends don't ask me to hang out with them very often maybe once a month max. Since I don't have anyone to hang out with I find my self at home a lot sitting in front of the computer. Around the house, I enjoy reading and drawing. Try setting yourself a project, like learning an instument or somthing. Personally, I started making animations a while ago, and if you have paticence its great fun and whittles away the hours with the promise of somthing finshed a possibly great that you can show the world at the end of it. Alternativly, take up somthing else such as sewing or woodwork, writing, drawing, anything you can some up with that used your talents.
Outside, sport is a great hobby, and if you find a club to join it can be very furfilling and fun, aswell as a good way to meet new people and get some exercise. And, lame as it may sound, doing more things with your family can be more fun then it seems. I would also suggest outdoor photography and jogging.
Its really all about finding things you enjoy and are good at.
And keep in mind that when I saw the title of this question, I was strongly considering just writing 'Masterbate' and be done with it, so appreciate the long and informative answer :P

My computer is being a -beep- ARGHHHH?
My computer keeps freezing every so often and it's really getting annoying! It will freeze for like 2-10 seconds. When I type things it'll randomly stop, but I can continue typing, so when it unfreezes the sentence I typed will still come up. I've ran scans on my computer and there's no viruses on it. It sometimes doesn't even load websites. I have to click on the url bar and click 'enter' again, or I'll just get a white page. And sometimes when I'm listening to music, it'll suddenly go all slow motion for like 5 seconds and then go back to normal.

If you keep adding them, you will run out of space on your hard drive in no time, if you haven't already. What I do for my photos and videos - I save them to CD's (you can sort them that way - 1 CD per event/trip/year/month - depending on how many photos you take) and I also save them to USB sticks (more portable, easy to take with to show people). This way you have 2 copies of all your memories and can be sure none of them will get lost.

I would recommend the free 30-day trial of Auslogics Disk Defrag Pro (there is a free version of their Disk Defrag, but the pro version has more capabilities and is worth giving a try). Skyrim i would recommend no less than 2g ram, a 2048 Graphics card, and probably a much higher level sound card as well, and if you want to record videos, you will want more than that.

I'm curious, I was planning to get a good graphics card for my laptop, to get high graphics on my

A gfx card in a laptop does nothing to cooler the computer. I have not heard of a water cooling for a laptop GPU. A waterblock is part of a water cooling system. You need the block, connectors, hoses, radiator, pump and fan(s). A gfx card can be many different things. Hi, I have just got a new laptop and my friend was telling me to "do the back up first".

What are some fun things to do alone?
My friends don't ask me to hang out with them very often maybe once a month max. Since I don't have anyone to hang out with I find my self at home a lot sitting in front of the computer. Around the house, I enjoy reading and drawing. Try setting yourself a project, like learning an instument or somthing. Personally, I started making animations a while ago, and if you have paticence its great fun and whittles away the hours with the promise of somthing finshed a possibly great that you can show the world at the end of it. Alternativly, take up somthing else such as sewing or woodwork, writing, drawing, anything you can some up with that used your talents.
Outside, sport is a great hobby, and if you find a club to join it can be very furfilling and fun, aswell as a good way to meet new people and get some exercise. And, lame as it may sound, doing more things with your family can be more fun then it seems. I would also suggest outdoor photography and jogging.
Its really all about finding things you enjoy and are good at.
And keep in mind that when I saw the title of this question, I was strongly considering just writing 'Masterbate' and be done with it, so appreciate the long and informative answer :P

Well its likely you have cox or an isp that uses similar things.
I have cox and they have powerboost, when you download larger files, it will download them faster then normal. But if you download smaller files it will load slower.
It could also be coincidence, and when you happen to load a lower quality video, others in your household are using alot of bandwidth at that time, so it loads slower. (or possibly someone stealing your wifi if its unprotected).
It could also be server load from the site you are watching from, alot of people watching videos at that moment, making it slower.

What the heck happened to my computer?
My computer is the emachines el1352. For the price it had very good reviews so my family got it when our old computer broke.
This computer has had some problems with system resume in the past where we would have to restart the computer for it to work and a few times I have gotten the BSOD most likely for hardware problems.
Also one time in the past it wouldn't start up correctly, and start up repair fixed it.
This time was worse though.
I tried to resume the computer from sleep/hibernation and it was just a blank screen. I thought it just needed a restart, but it would not boot up all the way. The emachines logo would flash and then it would just be black. The mouse and keyboard lights would come on, I could open the cd drive, I could put on caps lock etc. but it would not fully boot(I think).
I was trying to get into safe mode but no matter what I did after the emachines logo came up it would be black.
Perhaps the weirdest part is when I left the computer on for around 10 minutes to see what would happen. I don't remember if I pressed f8 this time unfortunately, but its a possibility that I did and then hit enter a few times for no reason. I looked at the computer later, and if I looked VERY closely I could see the dimmest characters on the screen ever. It was system start up repair running. All I saw was the text about this and I was pressing enter a few times to see if that finished it. Eventually it did finish and It said restart to finish(still verrrrrry dim lighted).
This did not work though unfortunately. I continued trying to get into safe mode but it wouldn't work. Finally I tried pressing f8 for safe mode and leaving it running again(this time I'm certain I pressed f8). Then I noticed another thing weird.
I had the monitor turned off and when I turned it on, I would see very quickly what was supposed to be on the screen(the options for safe mode). It went black in a flash though. I repeated this and the same thing would happen.
I hit down then enter and finally I could see the screen booting into safe mode. I was relieved that it was semi working. Then oddly enough, I just restarted the computer and it worked normally(though did take a little bit extra time to log in fully).
Anyone have a clue what the hell happened and if my computer is permanently messed up?What the heck happened to my computer?
When you mention the very dim text on the screen, this leads me to think your monitor is going out.
Black screens after startup, usually mean power supply bad, or video card going bad. Since its working sometimes, Im ruling out the power supply, as they usually work or not. Of course these are only educated guesses.
If possible you should rule out software issues before going on to hardware as software is usually the cause. If you could try reinstalling a fresh copy of windows if possible. This gets rid of corrupted data in the OS, viruses and spyware.
If the problem persists after a clean install then its the hardware.
No computer is permanently messed up, its just a matter of is it worth fixing, or just a better idea, to go buy a new one.
