If you are looking to choose where to boot from (CD/hard drive/thumb drive) You need to rapidly press the key right as your computer manufacturer logo pops up (Dell, HP, etc). Depending on your computer it could be any of the F Keys above your number keys. More commonly it will be F9-F12, but it could even be F1-F7

If you want to enter safe mode for windows you hit the F8 Key rapidly AFTER the manufacturer logo goes away.
